As part of Vietnam's coastal areas and islands, marine environment of Hoi An plays an important role in cultural life and local economy as well. The marine environment is considered as a mean of livelihood, and related beliefs and practices are well preserved. The tradition of relying on marine environment have been passed down through generations.

In May, with the approve of the People’s Committee of Hoi An city, Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation will organize a dedicatated seminar themed “Marine Culture of Hoi An: The value and preservation and promotion issues in the present context”.
