n Hội An, every year after the full moon of the first lunar month, fishing communities in the coastal villages begin busily preparing for the Cầu Ngư Festival, held in remembrance of Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân (the Whale, commonly called Cá Ông or “Lord Whale”), who is believed to protect and bless fishermen so that they may go out to sea in safety and return with holds full of fish and shrimp.

This festival is an important component of the long-standing whale worship belief system practiced by coastal communities in central Vietnam, of which Hội An represents a particularly distinctive local expression.

For generations, the sea has formed an essential part of the lives of the central Vietnamese coastal population in general and of Hội An residents in particular. The vast sea offers abundant resources, yet it also conceals constant dangers. For that reason, and because of the miraculous spiritual power attributed to Cá Ông in protecting boats and rescuing fishermen in times of peril, the Whale has long been regarded in the fishermen’s worldview as a benevolent tutelary deity of the maritime profession and is therefore deeply revered and worshipped. Đại Nam nhất thống chí records the saying: “In the North it is a fish, in the South it is a deity.” Thus, in nearly every coastal village of central Vietnam, fishermen established shrines and mausoleums to worship the Whale with profound spiritual devotion. Under the Nguyễn dynasty, Cá Ông was officially granted royal titles and honorifics of high rank, such as Từ tế, Chương linh, Trợ tín, Trừng trạm, and Dực bảo trung hưng, and these were conferred upon villages for formal worship.

Hội An is a coastal estuarine region located at the mouth of the Cửa Đại River, with a shoreline stretching over seven kilometers, offshore islands including Cù Lao Chàm, and an expansive marine zone. As a result, the sea has left a deep imprint on both the material and spiritual life of the local population. A visit to Hội An’s fishing villages, such as Tân Hiệp (that is, Cù Lao Chàm), Đại An, and Phước An (that is, Phước Trạch), makes it easy to recognize that whale worship occupies an important place in local spiritual culture, extending from mysterious legends and oral tales to beliefs, ritual practices, behavioral customs, worship architecture, and even place names that preserve traces of this tradition.

Cá Ông is respectfully referred to by fishermen as Ông Ngư (“Lord Fish”). In addition to Ông Ngư, there is believed to be an entourage of attendants and protective subordinate spirits. These include other large or unusual marine creatures that fishermen also regard with reverence, such as Ông Chuông, Ông Lộng, Ông Kìm, Ông Sứa, and Ông Mực. Out of deep respect and gratitude, when a whale dies and washes ashore, local fishermen consider it their duty and responsibility to organize a solemn and careful burial ceremony in a designated area, often known as a nghĩa trủng or whale cemetery. After several years, the fishermen then ceremonially exhume the Whale’s bones, regarded as ngọc cốt (“jade remains”), and bring them to the village shrine or mausoleum for preservation and worship.

In Hội An, nearly every fishing village has built a shrine or mausoleum dedicated to the worship and ritual veneration of Cá Ông. Although many of these sites suffered damage from natural disasters and war, several significant and long-established whale mausoleums still survive in Hội An today, including lăng Ông An Bàng in Cẩm An, lăng Ông Ngư in Tân Hiệp, lăng Ông Năm Sở in Cẩm Nam, lăng Ông in Cẩm Thanh, and lăng Tiêu Diện in Cửa Đại. These whale shrines are typically built on spacious plots of land in favorable locations and are notable for their large scale, solid construction, and rich aesthetic and humanistic value, from their architectural ornamentation to their interior arrangement and sacred spatial organization.

In overall layout, beyond the enclosing walls and entrance gate, there is usually a front screen wall in the form of a cuốn thư motif, often decorated with themes such as “Thần ngư hí nguyệt” (divine fish frolicking with the moon) and “lý ngư hóa long” (carp transforming into a dragon). Beyond a broad courtyard stands the shrine proper, usually arranged in the shape of the Chinese character đinh (丁), consisting of a front hall and rear sanctuary. These structures are built in the characteristic vaulted style, with yin-yang tiled roofs adorned with various decorative motifs such as “lưỡng long triều dương” (two dragons paying homage to the sun), turtles carrying books, phoenixes, qilin, flowers, and birds.

Although the interiors of these shrines are spacious, the multiple vaulted layers of the architecture, combined with dim natural light, create an atmosphere that is solemn, secluded, and mystical, especially in the rear sanctuary where the Whale bones are preserved. Within the interior, the altar of Ông Ngư and his attendant spirits occupies the central position, while side altars are dedicated to quang tiền dụ hậu or phúc hải thọ sơn. Most altar tables are decorated with painted motifs such as scroll patterns, phoenixes, hidden dragons, and whale imagery. Bone chests, spirit tablets of Cá Ông, and those of his attendant spirits are arranged in an orderly and dignified manner on the principal altar. At lăng Ông Ngư in Cù Lao Chàm, there are twelve old spirit tablets intricately carved and ornamented, including titles such as Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân Đại Tướng Quân Tôn Thần (Venerable Great General Deity of the South Sea Whale Spirit), Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân Quý Nương Đẳng Thần Tọa Vị (Sacred Seat of the Noble Lady Deity of the South Sea Whale Spirit), Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân Từ Tế Chi Thần (The Benevolent and Salvific Deity of the South Sea Whale Spirit), Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân Ông Hổ Tôn Thần (Venerable Tiger Lord Deity associated with the South Sea Whale Spirit), and Cung Thỉnh Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân Ông Mặc Tôn Thần (Reverently Invited Venerable Deity of Ông Mặc, associated with the South Sea Whale Spirit).

The existence of these whale shrines and the many surviving or recopied royal ordination decrees demonstrates both the importance and enduring vitality of whale worship in Hội An, as well as the sustained attention paid to this belief system by the Nguyễn dynasty. Among the eleven decrees currently documented, the earliest dates to the seventh year of Minh Mạng (1826), while the latest dates to the fifth year of Duy Tân (1911). The villages with the largest number of such decrees are Thanh Đông and Thanh Hà. All of these decrees affirm the spiritual efficacy and protective role of the deity Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân in defending the nation and rescuing the people.

The Cầu Ngư Festival, a particularly distinctive expression of whale worship, is solemnly organized by the fishing communities of Hội An’s coastal villages at their whale shrines after the full moon of the first lunar month. For example, it is held at lăng Ông An Bàng on the sixteenth day of the first lunar month, at lăng Ông in Cẩm Thanh on the tenth day of the second lunar month, at lăng Tiêu Diện on the sixteenth day of the second lunar month, and at lăng Ông Ngư in Cù Lao Chàm on the fourth day of the fourth lunar month. At this time, a festive atmosphere spreads throughout the village. Preparations for the ritual begin several days in advance with the enthusiastic participation of the entire community, especially the ritual organizing committee.

On the eve of the main ceremony, fishermen conduct a nghinh thần ritual, ceremonially inviting the deity and escorting Ông into the shrine, both on land and over river or sea routes. In the evening, depending on the village, there may be performances of hát bả trạo or hát bội. From early dawn on the day of the main ritual, fishermen gather at the whale shrine to participate first in rites for wandering spirits, followed by the formal sacrificial ritual dedicated to Nam Hải Cự Tộc Ngọc Lân according to traditional liturgical procedure.

The performance tradition of bả trạo is an indispensable part of the whale worship ceremony, not only adding to its solemnity and sacredness but also vividly expressing its humanistic and cultural values. Through both physical movements and sung recitations in various melodic forms, these performances praise the sacred power of Ông Ngư in rescuing and protecting fishermen, while also depicting the life of fishing communities in times of calm seas and violent storms, when Ông Ngư is believed to intervene and save them. As a result, the ritual evokes many emotional layers for participants and spectators alike.

Following the principal ritual, many lively sporting and communal activities are also organized, reflecting the experience, technical skill, and solidarity of the fishing community in navigating and mastering riverine and marine environments. These include boat racing, basket-boat spinning competitions, tug-of-war in the water, and similar events.

Whale worship belief in Hội An, with all of its constituent elements, from ritual space and worship institutions to ceremonial systems and folk performance traditions, not only strengthens community cohesion but also generates distinctive tangible and intangible cultural values specific to Hội An’s maritime region. These values deserve to be more fully recognized, properly assessed, and seriously preserved, while also being appropriately developed and promoted so that they may become an important cultural and tourism resource for Hội An as a Heritage City.
